Food packaging is an essential part of a company dealing with food products. Good packaging not only prevents the food from spillage but also has many other advantages. It protects the product from agents like temperature, water, dust, etc and hence conserves the quality of food. Packaging is an important and innovative source of marketing as well. The label and graphics on the package not only carry information but can be used to promote the brand also.
Types of Food Packaging
There are two popular ways of packaging:-
Multi-piece Food Packaging: – This type of packaging is designed for retail sale either as individual pieces or the entire package as a whole. This kind of packaging contains two or more individual packets of the same commodity with each individual packet containing the same quantity of the product. The multi piece packaging contains all the labeling descriptions that have to be mentioned on the package.
These types of packages are for direct sale to the consumers, for the consumption of the commodity which is inside the package. It is not meant for use by industrial or institutional consumers like railways, airways, hotels, etc.
Wholesale Packaging: – This type of packaging contains various retail packages for sale to intermediary and not for the consumers. These types of packets are sold to the intermediary who in turn sell it to the consumers. It contains ten or more retail packets, which are labeled according to the labeling requirements.
The labeling of the package does not need to contain the MRP or the date of manufacturing. It must contain the name and address of the manufacturer or the importer. The identity of the product as well as the total number of multi piece packages contained should be clearly mentioned in the package. These details mentioned in the package should be well defined, legible and clearly visible.
